Damon misses the days when he was human, when he and Stefan were “the Salvatore brothers, best friends”.

I’ve never seen Damon happier than when he was playing football with his little brother. There was no Katherine (not yet), no Elena…nobody but the two of them. 

But what Damon doesn’t realize (yet) is that he can be happy again. He just needs to understand that a girl is not worth destroying his relationship with his brother. And that’s why I strongly believe that Damon’s journey is about learning the value of Family. He needs to choose Stefan over anyone else, just like Stefan has always chosen Damon over anyone else.
